Embedded Systems: When, Where, and How Big

Growth numbers and projections can be difficult to fully understand. These large, sometimes elusive numbers often indicate how much a market may grow and by when. An interesting takeaway from research reports about burgeoning markets is not just how big by when, but also where, in the geographical sense, growth is expected to occur.

One new report from BCC Research, www.bccresearch.com, a research firm that covers the industrial and technology sectors as well as emerging markets, not only reports on the potential growth of embedded systems, it suggests where growth is likely to be concentrated. The report, called “EMBEDDED SYSTEMS: TECHNOLOGIES AND MARKETS,” suggests the global market for embedded technologies could reach $198.5 billion by 2019. This equates to a 5.4% CAGR (compound annual growth rate) during the next five years.

It also suggests the Asia-Pacific region will stand out as the “largest and fastest growing market” during this time period. The report says this region alone could reach $79 billion by 2019. According to BCC, the Asia-Pacific region’s growing middle class will play an important role in driving its market for embedded technologies.

The BCC report breaks down “where” growth will occur categorically as well as geographically. For instance, the firm separates embedded technologies into two categories: hardware and software. It found that while embedded hardware makes up the largest segment of the overall market, embedded software is the fastest moving segment.

Embedded systems are being leveraged in all kinds of industries—from healthcare to connected cars and beyond—so it is no surprise the market is on track for hefty growth. Other factors, including industry trends such as the movement toward open standards as well as socioeconomic shifts such as a growing middle class in the Asia-Pacific region, may also play a key role in fostering growth during the next five years.
