Boring of Lakeland FL is celebrating 92 years with a party at Lakeland Brewing Company in September for customers, prospects and friends.

The following came from Dean Boring:

This business was started September 24, 1924 by my grandfather Frank W. Myers, (my mother’s father) as Lakeland Typewriter & Supply, Inc. in downtown Lakeland. Myers had worked for a TW dealer part time in Tampa and liked dealing with customers representing companies not themselves personally for purchases.

Royal, Remington, Underwood and IBM were his options except IBM was direct only.  Somethings have not changed!  Myers  took on Royal and rode the train to 150 New Park Ave., Hartford (can you imagine that ride!) and spent a week learning how to repair Royal’s TW’s and a week in sales training.  He came back to Tampa on the train and moved the family to Lakeland and opened up.  Lot of tough times followed but technology always helps us re-invent ourselves including Myers.

Allan Boring, my dad, joined the company in 1952 and the business grew quite a bit do to his outside sales results.  When TW’s went away Royal TW Co. had the same problem we did, nothing to sell.  Royal private labeled KM copiers as Royal and 1973 we were back in business with “new technology” again, plain paper copiers.  We also sold office supplies and furniture until 2011.

In 1973 we moved to a new building and dad changed the name to Boring Business Systems, which I thought was stupid.  However it has worked out great as it stands out because it is so different.  I joined the company in 1968 and acquired it from my family in 1980.

We are still a Konica Minolta Dealer, maybe the oldest existing due to all the acquisitions. We are also handle Canon, Lexmark an HP.  We have 48 employees, and are expanding into the Tampa market.  We acquired Till Office Machines in 2012 who was a local Sharp dealer.  We purchased a local IT company in December 2012.

Then converted it to a Managed Network Services division with currently 5 IT technicians.  MNS is the fastest growing area of the business and now we are really “in the technology business”.  We have a growing MPS business and keep 12+ copier technicians busy with our KM and Canon base.

Our sales are up this year over last year which was best ever.  It has never been a better time to be in this business than now! Technology saves the day every time I get bored.
