Amstelveen, the Netherlands, March 20, 2015 – Ricoh Europe (Netherlands) B.V. Semiconductor Support Centre has launched a switch IC, the R5560Z, which protects devices from an overvoltage when external power adapters are failing. The small and thin WLCSP package offers a minimum footprint solution on circuit boards with a limited area and is therefore ideal for portable devices.

The R5560Z is a CMOS-based high-current and overvoltage protection switch IC with voltage suppressor that uses an NMOS transistor to achieve an ultra-low on resistance.

The chip has a number of additional circuits embedded to filter out noise when applying the input voltage, such as a startup debounce delay, followed by a soft-start to ramp up the output voltage smoothly. As soon as the chip is fully operating, the overvoltage lockout (OVLO) circuit will monitor the input voltage and will shut down the chip in case input voltage exceeds its threshold.

When the OVLO pin is connected to ground, the threshold is set internally to 6.8V. Using an external resistor divider, the OVLO threshold can be adjusted from 4V to 20V. Another circuit, the internal thermal shutdown, makes sure that in case of overheating, the device is switched off automatically.

The Power Good (PG) output pin confirms if the input voltage is correct. PG is driven low after the startup debounce period and after the input voltage remains stable within the OVLO criteria (minimum Vin and Vin_ovlo), except during the thermal shutdown operation.

The R5560Z is available in a WLCSP-12-P2 package (1.288 x 1.828 x 0.64mm) (l x w x h).
