McDONOUGH — Paper trails are like mosquitoes in Georgia — they’re everywhere.

Nearly everyone has used a paper copier, whether at work or in public, to make copies of personal documents like tax returns, a passport or driver’s license. Authorities offer this bit of information to consider before hitting the big green copy button: Copied documents are stored on the machine’s hard drive.

Since 2002, most copiers, printer, scanners and fax machines contain hard drives and these hard drives store data — thousands of images copied, scanned, faxed or printed.
