By: Josie Heskje, GreatAmerica – 7,882. Do you remember this number? Or this date – October 10, 2008? Within the first few minutes of trading on Wall Street, the Dow Jones Industrial Average plunged 697 points, falling to its lowest level since March 17, 2003. America’s economic system crashed.

Lehman Brothers had declared bankruptcy (the largest in U.S. history at the time) just less than three weeks prior; the fear in the air was palpable. Eventually, the US government bailed out many big banks and provided aid to the auto industry in an attempt to facilitate an economic recovery.
