Elatec participates at the Printing Summit held in Madrid Spain on October 18, 2017 where the main topic was Printing, Security and the NEW European initiative – GDPR.

On May 25, 2018 the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will go into effect. It was designed to harmonize data privacy laws across Europe, to protect and empower all EU citizens data privacy and to reshape the way organizations across the region approach data privacy. It is the most important change in data privacy regulation in 20 years.

What is Elatec’s point of view on the European GDPR, security and regulation and printing devices?

We want all print devices to have an Elatec RFID reader connected to it. Our goal is to minimize the risk of loss of information such as usernames and passwords, as well as the PIN # entered at each device. We feel that all this information being entered manually can easily be compromised. We feel strongly that being part of print release security and authentication plays a big part in the GDPR regulation.

How does Elatec guarantee security throughout the printing process?

The identified risks are documents that end up in the wrong hands. User names and passwords that are compromised, unsecured document sitting waiting at the printers. We compliment print management software or hardware by minimizing all risks of manually entering credentials. We also greatly compliment and simplify the function of Authentication and Print Release with the swipe of a card. Elatec also offers additional security features upon request. We can work with software providers to create encryption between card and reader and/or reader and software. We do this with an encrypted key. We also integrate our readers under the covers of most MFP manufacturers. This hides all the wiring, the connectors and basically protects the readers from any external access and interference.

From Elatec’s point of view, what are the next steps companies should take to comply with GDRP regulation and security in the printing environment?

Companies concerned about security need to implement Print Management software. This is a critical piece in gaining control of printing in their environment. They can also enable additional security functions such as rules and restrictions to gain even further control in their environment. We also greatly feel that Print Management and ECM companies hosting a cloud solution need to be sure they are working with GDPR approved Cloud hosting sites like Microsoft Azure or (AWS) Amazon Web Services.

We here at Elatec want to be part of this. We want to further this security and compliment these Print Management companies with an even simpler process and a more secure authentication and print release option as well as SSO (Single Sign On).
