3D printing is exploding in popularity, and a new study suggests that sales of 3D printers will skyrocket over the next few years.
A study by International Data Corp.predicts that 3D printing sales will increase by 10 times by 2017. It’s now moving beyond the techies and early adopters and businesses are seeing more practical uses for it, the Pittsburgh Business Times reports.

Traditional printer vendors are also looking to take advantage of the emerging technology, with Hewlett-Packard preparing to enter the market in 2014, and Konica Minolta about to sign a U.S. agreement to distribute a leading manufacturer’s 3-D printers.
“Print is extending beyond output on media to the creation of an actual object, and that presents incredible opportunity,” Keith Kmetz, vice president of imaging, printing and document solutions at IDC said in a statement. “While traditional print technologies are facing maturity, 3D printers will see worldwide unit shipments grow by 10 times over the forecast period, and worldwide hardware value will more than double in the short term.”
