The year was 1987 when 20-year-old Roland Brown got the call that would set the course of his career.

“I was the first one hired for the laser beam printer,” Brown, a Mathews native, recalled while whisking through the Canon Virginia facility in Newport News one afternoon. “I was a field service repair tech for Savin and Ricoh. As Canon opened a factory here, I was already a copier tech, and I was offered that position.”

He wouldn’t be the last.
